Emotional Intelligence is an essential competency for leaders in the corporate environment today. Leaders possessing high emotional intelligence are able to recognize and understand their own emotions as well as discern the emotions of those around them. This ability helps to build a work environment with fruitful communication while fostering trust and connection with team members. Building relationships and social skills with employees helps achieve shared goals and inspires creativity and connection. An emotionally intelligent leader possesses skills of self-management, self-awareness, social awareness and relationship management.
As a leader with emotional intelligence, I positively impact my organization by taking time to actively listen to my team and build relationships. This influences everyday decisions and increases personal growth both with my team and myself. Utilizing emotional intelligence brings improved communication. Teams feel a sense of belonging and being included which can have the downstream effect of more engagement and less missed days. In the workforce today there is great diversity and valuing the perspectives of my team members improves morale and helps to motivate them to achieve their goals, both professionally and personally. This contributes to the organization with better decision-making skills, conflict resolution, and greater work experience.
My artifact for this core competency is a PowerPoint portfolio from OGL 360 Assessment of Leadership. I took this class as part of my Organizational Leadership degree program. In this class I was paired with two other students to engage in coaching sessions over the course of five weeks with a final portfolio due. The coaching sessions were probably the most valuable part of my entire bachelor’s program. It was an incredibly educational and emotional experience. I learned so much about leadership, communicating with people and emotional intelligence. The portfolio includes information about leadership and the five values that are most important to me in leadership. My core values of love, integrity, compassion, growth and resilience and shown with symbols in a photograph. The portfolio shows my vision for the future. I completed and graphed a leadership inventory assessment. I analyzed my limiting assumptions and created a sociogram. Part III of the portfolio are action items to get to where I want to be. These are ongoing goals I am pursing in my life and career.

The importance of this competency is possessing this skill to use in my personal and professional life. This is part of my Organizational degree program because it has a direct correlation to being in a working environment with colleagues and managers. As I utilize this skill to contribute to self-awareness and able to self-manage my emotions is so valuable in a work setting and also in many personal situations. I have grown in my ability to recognize bias and understand my own emotions. Thus, being able to regulate my responses and contributions positively.
