DIVERSITY INCLUSION

Diversity inclusion is new to the core competency arena but is essential in any business today. Diversity is the practice of uniting people with different lifestyles, cultures and experiences. It allows companies to hire the best candidate for the job from the largest candidate pool. Diversity and inclusion equates to a higher function workforce with a higher level of consciousness. This positively affects both employee and customer satisfaction. Collaboration and innovation are at a higher level when diverse groups work together. Diversity inclusion can have a favorable effect on economic growth with the additional perspectives and experience in the global market.

As a diversity inclusion leader, I can impact the workforce with opportunities and strategies to cultivate an environment where everyone feels safe and valued. I would work closely with all departments within the organization to develop and implement policies for attracting and retaining an inclusive workforce. My skills can be used to align company goals and values with diversity and inclusion practices making a better workplace for collaboration and innovation. This builds strong relationship within the company which helps to increase employee satisfaction. 

The Artifact I chose for Diversity and Inclusion is the Cultural Immersion Experience paper from OGL 350 Diversity and Organizations. This class was so good because I currently work in Human Resources and it explored what diversity and equity looks like in organizations and what needs to be improved upon. For the project I first interviewed someone who is not from the United States. Vadim, my subject, is from Russia and we talked about issues surrounding what immigrants experience in new countries, both publicly and professionally. Vadim has had a good experience because he moved to Arizona and has been surrounded by a large extended family on his wife's side, but I was able to see what challenges and difference she faced growing up and how coming to the U.S. is hard for professionals from other countries. Vadim was an attorney in Russia but is currently employed at a private school doing maintenance. We also went to a restaurant that served traditional Russian favorites and walked through the international market attached to the restaurant. This experience was important for me to see and added to my learning of diverse situations in the workplace.
Artifact
The importance of this competency is possessing inclusive and equity driven skills to use in my personal and professional life. This is part of my Organizational degree program because it has a direct correlation to being in a working environment with colleagues and managers. I have learned so much about what diversity is. It is far more than just race, sexual orientation or age. I think I have learned the most regarding diversity and equity in the workplace because I realize it includes having a workspace where everyone feels included and respected. There are so many different aspects to discrimination that I was not aware of. By learning how to implement this skill in work and my personal life will make me a much better human.
