decision making/

problem solving

Decision making and problem solving is a core competency that includes some of the other core competencies like critical thinking and communication skills. Decision makers have the ability to critically evaluate information and decide on a course of action. They utilize good communication skills to actively listen, think outside the box and evaluate options. Problem solving requires finding a good solution by identifying the cause. This competency also utilizes communication skills to effectively listen to the problem and then restate it before pursuing options. A problem solver may have to do research, analyze information and brainstorm innovative ideas.

As a decision making and problem-solving leader, I am able to identify root cases of problems and then choosing an approach that I feel is best suited for the situation. I can use these skills in various areas of the organization, from solving technology issues to working with marketing and research to really any department. In my department I am tasked with more department specific problems like deciding on the best way to handle a disgruntled customer or solving efficiency issues.

The Artifact I used for the Decision Making/Problem Solving competency is not a major project, but a skill that I learned in a specialized class called The Aikido Way OGL 340. This class is based on the Japanese martial art that encourages non-violent conflict resolution. It is a technique that can be used in the workplace to promote self-improvement and understanding. In this paper I took a conflict and used the Burn Clean Model to resolve the conflict by identifying both the event and reaction. It allows for a heated situation to be resolved peacefully. I think this is incredibly important in solving problems in the workplace and making health decisions.

The importance of this competency is possessing this skill to use in my personal and professional life. This is part of my Organizational degree program because it has a direct correlation to being in a working environment with colleagues and managers. Decision Making and Problem Solving is something that affects everyone and mastering this skill improves situations within business and externally as well. I utilize this skill everyday in many ways. Having learned to evaluate and consider all possible solutions has given me broader perspective. I am working to implement the strategies associated with this skill as part of my daily routine.
