communication

Communication is the foundation of leadership competency. It can be verbal or non-verbal. To effectively lead in an organization, communication is important for establishing relationships and sharing information. A good communicator listens intently for understanding and shares feedback for improved decision making. Authentic communication builds trust between team members. Communication can also mean you have to have difficult conversations with employees and customers. When good communication takes place, it decreases the possibility for misunderstandings. Listening is also am important part of communication.

Leading my team with communication is important to me as a foundational basis. As a leader I want to be able to listen effectively to my team and forge good relationships so that trust is established.  Aligns company goals with team by encouraging collaboration. Motivate my team through sharing the company vision and mission. I help to resolve conflict by constructively listening and mediating between team members.

The Artifact I chose is from OGL 360 Assessment of Leadership and it is a recap assignment from a coaching session. This assignment was transformative for me. When the instructor first told us we would have these coaching sessions I groaned, most team based assignments are fraught with scheduling issues and no-shows, so I was underwhelmed. This was much different. I was paired with 2 other members of the class who were of different ages, genders and resided in different states. I had never been in a coaching scenario and it was incredible. Having someone else talk with you about your work situation and then give you feedback about what they see and make suggestions or offer ideas for work betterment was very valuable. I think it is one of the most valuable classes I have been involved in during the Organizational Leadership program. So although the paper is underwhelming by college standards for an Artifact, it has incredible meaning to me.

The importance of this competency should not be understated. Having excellent communication skills affects all of the other organizational skills. I use this skill in my personal and professional life. This is part of my Organizational degree program because it has a direct correlation to being in a working environment with colleagues and managers. When I communicate effectively I build trust with others and form relationships. An important aspect of communication is verbal and non-verbal skills because much of what we do is not straight forward and cultivating the skill of watching closely and listening intently enhances the skill of communication and improves interactions. I work on my communication skills everyday so I can improve on this as much as possible. In the coaching sessions, communication was the crucial ingredient and I am glad I have learned a lot about effective communication.
